The 2008 selections for Sea and Shore Sailor of the Year (SOY)
were announced, March 14, by Rear Adm. Bill Goodwin, commander,
Naval Air Force Atlantic.
The Sea SOY is Aviation Boatswain's Mate 1st Class (Handling)
(AW/SW) Brian Lewis. Lewis is assigned to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower
(CVN 69) homeported at Norfolk.
In making the announcement Goodwin noted that all the Sailors are
winners who "have defined a framework for personal excellence, one
that clearly demonstrates the importance of performance and high
standards of conduct in everything we do. You represent your command
as the very best of the best."
"You are more than simply a product of a tough job, you symbolize
the very best our Navy has to offer," said Goodwin.
Lewis enlisted in the Navy in October 1996 and initially served
aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Five years later he was hand
selected for Presidential Support Duty at Camp David. He has been
aboard Eisenhower since November 2005, and is presently assigned to
Air Department as the flight deck leading petty officer. He also
serves as president of the ship's First Class Petty Officers
Association and a Member of the Aviation Boatswain's Mates
Association (ABMA).
Lewis is married. He will represent Naval Air Force Atlantic for SOY
honors at U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
